How to Tip a Prom Party Bus Driver

Standard tipping ranges for prom
When gratuity is not included, plan about 15–20% of the transportation subtotal for a smooth photo→dinner→venue night with a professional CDL driver. Exceptional problem-solving in traffic or tight venue logistics can justify the higher end.
For flat packages, calculate the tip from the pre-tax transportation total unless the invoice already shows a mandatory service charge labeled as gratuity.
Check the quote before collecting student money
Some prom contracts add a mandatory gratuity or service fee. Paying that line item and tipping the same percentage again is a common parent mistake—ask which staff the fee reaches.
If gratuity is included, a small extra cash thank-you is optional when the driver clearly went beyond the plan. If it is not included, the planned percentage should already be in each student’s share.
Who holds the tip
A parent treasurer should collect tip money with the balance, not chase Venmo requests as the bus idles at the venue. Hand one envelope or send one payment per the company’s instructions at night’s end.

Cash vs. card tips
Follow the company’s process. Some add card tips to the final invoice; others prefer cash to the driver. Ask the day before prom so you are not experimenting at drop-off.
Get a receipt when tip is processed on a card. Keep it with the contract in case a student family questions the all-in accounting later.
